Compiler’s Comments. There were no real surprises on this count, no rarities to excite the crowd at the roundup. Persistent snow/ice cover from a December 18 storm prevented many of our field participants from walking woodland trails, traversing weedy fields, or following hedgerows and ditches as they usually do; this no doubt led to the scarcity of species generally found in these habitats. The day’s total numbers were lower than usual and many expected birds – Wilson’s Snipe, Wood Duck, Hairy Woodpecker, Pine Siskin, and various duck species, for example – were missing completely. And we all bemoaned the fact that we had missed having a "Count Week" Bald Eagle by hours, as one had been seen and photographed late on Christmas Day, barely missing the deadline for inclusion. Maybe next year.
