| Rare Bird: Two birders from SC found this unusual bird in one of the fields on Hooper Lane (Mills River_ on August 29, later positively identified by Wayne Forsythe and Simon Thompson as an immature long-billed curlew. Found mostly in midwest and west, sightings in this area are extremely rare. This bird stayed for several days, happily grazing in the field. (Photo courtesy Wayne Forsythe) | ![]() |

Norma and Jim Aguilar found this northern parula on the deck of their Knob Creek home in late August. Nice shot! |
Carolyn Powell took these shots of a blue-winged warbler (either a female or an immature) that visited the deck of her Connestee Falls home in mid-August. This is the same woman who photographed nesting crossbills last year.
Here are three photos of the crossbill pair seen on June 12 and again on June 16 at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education. These photos were taken on June 16 by Jennifer Rowe, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

The bright plumage of the male indicates a full adult, but the plumage of the female (center photo) is all brown except for the bright yellow area on her back. This differs from the mostly yellow plumage shown in most field guides, so this bird is most likely a juvenile.

Here's a photo, taken in mid-June by Bill Thomas,of an Acadian flycatcher on its nest near Golden Pond in Sherwood Forest. Another nest in Sherwood Forest, found by Carolyn Mills, was predated as soon as the young hatched, but hopefully this one will succeed. |
|
Apparently, it did! Bill took this photo of the baby Acadians in the nest on July 6, with the adult bird hanging around scolding gently. The nest was empty the next morning, so Bill thinks the babies made it! |
| Swainson's warbler, Lower Lost Spring Trail, Sherwood Forest; photo taken in mid-June by Bill Thomas. While the photo is not as sharp as one would like, it documents the first time that we know of this species being in this location, near the eastern boundary of Sherwood Forest. Note the bird's yellowish belly, not shown in most field guides. |

Penny Longhurst and Howard Colby, Connestee Falls sent in this photo of a leucistic goldfinch, taken in mid-March.
Joe Kotowski, Cascade Lake Road, found this pine warbler at his feeder at the end of February. Yes, the photo on the right is the same bird as seen in the photo on the left.
