Data from Recent TCBC Bird Counts

Christmas Bird Counts

The 2009 CBC was hampered by cold, breezy weather and persistent snow and ice on the ground from the big December 18 storm. This meant that field observers were unable to access many of the usual habitats, and consequently several of our 'regular' CBC species were unobserved this year. We managed only 63 species on Count day with an added three for Count week. Results are posted on this website and also on the Audubon CBC website.

The 2008 CBC was favored with near-perfect weather. Although we had fewer participants than in 2007, we still managed to spot 68 species on count day and 10 more for count week. To see our 2008 results, click HERE.

The 2007 Christmas Bird Count was a wet affair yielding 67 species for the day and 10 more for count week.  Not bad considering the fairly dreadful rainy weather encountered by the hardy 22 observers in the field (plus 10 watching feeders).

The results of our very successful 2006 CBC can be seen at CBC 2006 .  The club's CBC results for 2007 and prior years may be seen at the Audubon web site.

Spring Bird Counts

2010 Spring Count Results - our total of 115 species was on the high side of our average results. We were quite pleased, given the cold, late spring and the count’s very early date of May 1.

2009 Spring Count Results - our total of 109 species was a bit less than usual, but we thought we did well considering that several of our more experienced birders could not participate this time. A highlight for this count was the recording of red crossbills for the first time on a TCBC spring count.

2008 Spring Count - not part of the NAMC as it was scheduled a week earlier than the NAMC in order to attempt to maximize our possibilities in terms of species (and to avoid the conflict with Mother's Day weekend).

Results of the 2007 North American Migration Count. A plucky if limited group of birders took to the fields and feeders and did their best.

The 2006 North American Migration Count are posted for Transylvania County. This is an annual count by number and species that are able to be located within a given county on a specific day in May.  Specific attention is paid to migratory species that (with some luck) tend to be more visible.  Valuable information about population trends, etc. can be gleaned from this data.
