******** Please note the 10 a.m. meeting time for our winter field trips, starting January 9. ********

January

Saturday January 9. Hospital Fields. Even in winter this place can be productive. We will explore the fields and brush for sparrows and other cold-weather birds. Meet at the Rec. Dept. parking lot at 10 a.m.

Saturday January 16. Sugarloaf Road and the airport hedgerows. Wear sturdy footgear and dress for wind as we check out the hidden bird life of this riverside site. Meet at the beginning of Sugarloaf Rd., just off Gallimore Rd., at 10 a.m.

Saturday January 23. Hannah Ford Rd. and Lyons Mt. Rd. Sparrows in the brush, raptors over the fields – this can be a top spot if conditions are right. Meet at the Sav-Mor parking lot, Rosman Highway, at 10 a.m.

Saturday January 30. Makeup Date. Meet at the Kmart parking lot, near the EMS building, at 10 a.m. and we’ll decide where to go from there.

February

Saturday February 6. Hospital Fields. The cast of avian characters changes daily, so it’s worth it to check the same site repeatedly. Meet at the Rec. Dept. parking lot at 10 a.m.

Saturday February 13. Poplar Lane and Merrill Lane. These two Little River sites offer fields, woods, and riverside habitat, which often makes for a good mix of birds. Meet at the fishermen’s pulloff on Poplar Lane at 10 a.m.

Saturday February 20. Brevard College fields. The swampy area here may have some sparrow surprises, and the area around the Mormon Church is often productive. Meet at the church parking lot, off Neely Rd., at 10 a.m.

Saturday February 27. Makeup Date. See January 30 entry for details.

March

Saturday March 6. Hospital Fields. How do the resident birds change their habits as spring approaches? Let’s find out. Meet at the Rec. Dept. parking lot at 10 a.m.

Saturday March 13. Windover and other Calvert sites. Meet at the Island Ford Road river access at 10 a.m.

Saturday March 20. The Ranger Station and English Chapel areas. Perhaps an early blue-headed vireo will be singing, or a Louisiana waterthrush calling from a stream. Meet at the Ranger Station at 10 a.m.

Saturday March 27. Makeup Date. See January 30 entry for details.
